Becoming

Pregnancy changes much more than just the appearance of the body. The Becoming series highlights the physical, neural, and experiential changes that pregnancy has on a person, in addition to the scientific research that strives to illuminate those changes.
The Becoming series incorporates the research of Hannah Grotzinger and Ariella Zulch, whose work focuses on neuroplasticity and neurogenesis through pregnancy. Each piece embodies change as a physical substance, whether that be neuroanatomical growth in tandem with rodent studies (piece 1), postpartum experiences and PPD (piece 2), or social perception and connection (piece 3). Despite present research uncovering some of the mysteries of pregnancy regarding the brain, there is still a general lack of awareness in society about individual, experiential changes. Ultimately, pregnancy is a transformative experience; it is a metamorphosis–a becoming–of sorts. The Becoming series aims for a greater understanding of the changes during pregnancy and its importance in reproductive health research.
